Terms of Service

Distil is operated by BNT Technologies, 5 Square de Roncevaux, 78180 Montigny-le-Bretonneux, France(“Distil”, “we”, “us”). “You” is the person or organisation using the service. If you use Distil for an organisation, you confirm you are authorised to accept these terms on its behalf.

You upload documents. Distil extracts their content into a knowledge base, generates a site — a chatbot, portfolio, FAQ or documentation site — and hosts it for you at a Distil subdomain, with an AI assistant that answers from your content. You can customise the site with plain-language prompts and publish it.

Distil is in public beta. Features may change, move or be removed; processing may occasionally fail or produce imperfect results; and there may be downtime without notice. Do not use the beta as the only copy of anything: keep your own originals of every document you upload.

The service is free during the beta. We will give account holders reasonable notice by email before introducing paid plans, and you will never be charged without agreeing first.

You must be at least 18 years old. Accounts are created by signing in with Google; keep that Google account secure, because anyone who can sign into it can reach your Distil apps. You are responsible for everything done through your account. Tell us at hello@ondistil.com if you believe it has been compromised.

You keep ownership of everything you upload and of the sites generated from it. We claim no ownership over your documents, your knowledge base or your published site.

To run the service we need permission to handle that content. You grant us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to host, store, copy, reformat, index, embed, transmit and display your content and the sites generated from it, and to send it to the AI providers listed in our Privacy Policy — strictly for the purpose of operating and supporting the service for you. The licence lasts as long as you keep the content on Distil and ends when you delete it, apart from short-lived copies in backups.

We do not use your content to train AI models, and we do not sell or share it with anyone other than the processors named in the Privacy Policy. You confirm you have the rights to everything you upload and publish.

You agree not to:

• Upload or publish illegal content, or content that infringes someone else’s intellectual property, privacy or other rights.
• Publish malware, phishing pages, spam, or content that impersonates a person or organisation.
• Upload personal data you have no right to share, or special-category data (health, biometric, political or religious data) without a lawful basis.
• Scrape, crawl or bulk-extract the service, or use automated means to create accounts, upload content or send chat messages.
• Circumvent quotas, rate limits or authentication, share credentials or tokens, or resell access to the service.
• Probe, load-test or attack the infrastructure, or use Distil as a general-purpose proxy to the underlying AI models.
• Use Distil to generate content that harasses, defames, or endangers people, or that is otherwise unlawful where it is published.

Your use also has to respect the acceptable-use policies of the AI providers behind the service (Anthropic and OpenAI).

Answers, summaries and generated copy are produced by large language models. They are grounded in your documents and cite sources, but they can still be wrong, incomplete, or misleading — including confidently so. Distil makes no warranty that any output is accurate, current or fit for a particular purpose.

You are responsible for reviewing what your site says before you publish it and for what it tells your visitors afterwards. Do not rely on outputs for legal, medical, financial or other professional advice, and do not present them as such to others.

Free-tier allowances during the beta, per account, applied daily unless noted:

Daily counters run on a rolling 24-hour window: an action stops counting against you 24 hours after it happened. A separate per-visitor cap keeps one source from burning a site’s whole chat allowance. If you need more, ask at hello@ondistil.com — we raise limits for reasonable use. We may adjust these allowances as the beta evolves, and may throttle or suspend usage that threatens the stability or cost of the service for everyone else.

Published sites are served from a Distil subdomain and are public: do not upload anything you are not willing to have answered publicly by your assistant. You are the publisher of that site and remain responsible for its content, for informing your visitors about the data you collect from them, and for complying with the law where your visitors are. We may take down a published site that breaks these terms or exposes us to legal risk.

The service is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, uninterrupted availability or freedom from errors or data loss. We do not offer a service level agreement during the beta.

You can stop at any time: delete an app from its dashboard, or delete your whole account under Dashboard → Account, which permanently removes your apps, documents, knowledge, sites, conversations and account data.

We may suspend or terminate an account that breaks these terms, that creates legal or security risk, or that has been inactive for a long period — with notice where we reasonably can, immediately where the breach is serious. We may also discontinue the service; if we do, we will give account holders reasonable notice and time to export their content.

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Distil is not liable for indirect or consequential damage, lost profits, lost business, lost data or lost goodwill arising from your use of the service, or for decisions taken on the basis of AI-generated output.

Because the service is provided free of charge during the beta, our total aggregate liability to you for all claims is limited to one hundred euros (€100), or the amount you have paid us in the twelve months before the claim if that is higher. Nothing here excludes liability that cannot be excluded under French law, including for fraud, gross negligence, wilful misconduct, or death or personal injury caused by our negligence. If you are a consumer, your mandatory statutory rights are unaffected.

You will indemnify us against third-party claims arising from content you upload or publish through Distil, or from your breach of these terms.

Distil relies on third parties to function — Anthropic and OpenAI for AI, AWS and Oracle Cloud for infrastructure, MongoDB Atlas for storage, Google for sign-in. Their outages, changes or restrictions can affect the service, and we are not responsible for their acts or omissions beyond the processor commitments described in our Privacy Policy.

Our Privacy Policy explains what personal data we process and why. It forms part of these terms.

We may update these terms as the product changes. The “Last updated” date at the top reflects the current version, and we will notify account holders by email before a material change takes effect. Continuing to use Distil after that means you accept the new terms; if you do not, delete your account.

These terms are governed by French law, without regard to conflict of law rules. The courts of France have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute, except that consumers keep the right to bring proceedings in the courts of their country of residence and to rely on the mandatory consumer-protection rules that apply there.

If a provision of these terms is found unenforceable, the rest stays in force.
